Infertility

Infertility is frequently defined as the inability of a couple to conceive and, subsequently, for a woman to carry a pregnancy to term, after one year of unprotected intercourse.

IUI (Sperm Washing and Intrauterine Insemination)

The purification of a raw semen sample to prepare it for artificial insemination.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

IVF involves the stimulation and removal of eggs, then the subsequent fertilization and development of the eggs in an outside culture system. When matured, the fertilized eggs are transferred back to the woman’s uterus.

MESA

Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration involves the removal of sperm from the epididymal sac through an incision. An operating microscope is then used to assess the tissue.

Miscarriage

Loss of an existing pregnancy, also referred to by doctors as a spontaneous abortion.

Oocytes

Eggs in a woman's ovaries.

Ovulation Induction

The use of medication to stimulate multiple follicles in the ovaries to grow and ovulate.

Pelviscopy/operative Laparoscopy

Whereby if pathology (disease) is noted at the time of laparoscopy, it is treated during that operative session.

PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis)

Diagnosis of genetic disease in an embryo before it is transferred to the uterus. This procedure may include screening of the embryo for familial genetic disorders.

PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Screening)

Screening of the embryo for the right number of copies of certain chromosomes, may include flourescence insitu hybridization (FISH), a tool for counting the number of chromosomes in the embryo.

SHG (Sonohysterogram)

The use of ultrasound to evaluate the inside of the uterine cavity. Involves the injection of saline solution into the cavity of the uterus.

Sperm Donation

The utilization of regulated donor sperm from a sperm bank.

Sperm Washing

The purification of a raw semen sample to prepare it for artificial insemination.

Treatment and evaluation of recurrent miscarriage.

TESA

Testicular Sperm Aspiration involves the removal of sperm directly from the testicles by fine needle or biopsy.
